Endohelminth parasites of two scianidae fishes from the south- east coast of India

A total of 284 specimens of Scianidae fishes Kathala axillaris and Nibea albida were collected from Parangipettai coastal waters southeast coast of India and examined for endohelminth parasites. Seven helminth species were recorded. Capillaria brevispicula, Porrocaecum reticulatum, Leppetascaris lutijani (Nematodes), Hemiurus appendiculatus, Stephanostomum triacanthi (Trematodes), Rhadinorhynchus johnstoni, Pseudorhadinorhynchuus samegaiensis (Acanthocephalans) found in both host species. The most abundant parasites were Capillaria brevispicula and Pseudorhadinorhynchuus samegaiensis in K. axillaries and N. albida respectively. Feeding habits and habitat preference of the two hosts are probably the major factors accounting for the difference their parasite burdens. © 2012 Universal Research Publications. All rights reserved
